Welcome to the first part of our series where I, Scarlett, the founder of WonderURL, dive into hair care with the wonderful Salima. Today, we’re going to talk about understanding your unique hair type and finding the best cleansing routine tailored for it. So, let’s get started!
Getting to Know Your Hair
Before we dive into products and routines, it's crucial to know your hair! Salima, like many of us, is still uncovering the mysteries of her own hair texture and porosity. Understanding these elements can greatly influence how you care for your hair and what products will work best for you.
“It's funny because a lot of people don't really know much about their hair. Especially when it comes to porosity, most of us are just figuring it out.” - Scarlett
What is Hair Texture?
The texture of your hair can generally be classified based on curl patterns. As we looked into Salima's hair, we noticed:
- 3C Type: These are looser curls, often found at the back of the head.
- 4A Type: These tighter curls often appear at the front.
Different areas of your scalp can have varied textures, which is completely normal.

What is Hair Porosity?
Porosity refers to your hair’s ability to absorb moisture and products. It can range from low to high. Observing how wet hair absorbs water can give you clues about its porosity level.
"Once I get your hair wet, we can determine the porosity because dry hair doesn't reveal much." - Scarlett
Choosing the Right Shampoo
With Salima’s hair wet, we went through the right steps to choose and use the ideal shampoo.
Here’s Why Shampooing is Crucial
Regardless of your hair type or porosity, cleansing is essential. Product build-up can hinder your hair from absorbing moisture correctly and can affect its health.
"Always cleanse your hair with a good shampoo. It doesn't need to be moisturizing unless your hair is damaged." - Scarlett
Steps to Shampoo Your Hair
- Wetting the Hair: Begin with thoroughly wetting your hair to see how it absorbs the water.
- Using a Detoxifying Shampoo Bar: We used a detoxifying shampoo bar to clean without stripping the hair's natural oils.
- Focus on Cleansing: Aim for shampoos that are cleansing rather than moisturizing, unless your hair is highly porous or damaged.

The Right Water Temperature
There are myths around using cold or hot water on your hair. However, it’s more about personal comfort than anything.
- Cold Water: Not ideal as it can make oils and conditioners harden, which affects rinsing.
- Warm Water: It helps in getting rid of oils and other build-ups more effectively.
“Use whatever temperature you’re comfortable with. Warm water helps cleanse better, but it's the products and your drying method that matter most.” - Scarlett
Beyond Cleansing: Knowing Your Hair's Needs
For individuals with dense and varied hair like Salima, dividing your hair into sections can help ensure that products reach every strand.
Determining Your Hair's Porosity
By applying shampoo and seeing how quickly or slowly your hair absorbs it, you can assess if it's low, medium, or high porosity:
- Low Porosity: Hair doesn't absorb products/water quickly and is often resistant to moisture.
- Medium Porosity: Hair is well-balanced and typically holds styles well.
- High Porosity: Hair absorbs water and products rapidly but might release moisture quickly too.
Embrace Your Hair Story
Everyone's hair has a story. Understanding and cherishing this can enhance how we approach our hair care routines. As we’ve seen with Salima, patience and exploration are key.
"This is your hair. This is your hair story. Let’s tell it together." - Scarlett

Wrap-Up: Weekly Cleansing Routine
To keep hair healthy and clean, it's recommended that all product users cleanse weekly. Still, make sure you’re not overdoing it, as over-washing can strip essential oils.
Quick Tips
- Shampoo weekly with a cleansing shampoo.
- Section your hair if it’s dense to ensure complete cleaning.
- Match water temperature and products to your comfort and hair’s needs.
Remember, understanding your hair is the first step to loving it, so don’t be afraid to take your time with this exploration!
